Let’s get rid of the elephant in the room, shall we? I got a pretty ugly email the other day. Followed by a rude text. Okay, not really. But:

It seems that since I’m about to be a certain age, I’m entitled to “special savings.”

Now I’m all about perks. Freebies should be my middle name. But c’mon. We don’t need to advertise it so blatantly. How unspecial is it to be called old (which, if we’re being honest, I wasn’t). Not to pour salt on the wound, Momma, but how does it feel that your baby is days away from getting senior citizen discounts at the coffee shop? Okay, so maybe I’m overreacting. (Like I’ve never done that before!) But the struggle bus has not yet stopped at the crossroads of Age and Gracefully.

Then there’s the whole Daylight Savings Time about to happen. “Spring Forward,” they say. “It’ll be good for the summer.”

First of all, who is “They?” And secondish, YOUDONTKNOWTHAT. Anyone else feel it’s kinda like John McClain accepting his wife’s invitation to the Nakatomi Christmas Party?

This is the part where I explain my recent absence: The last few years were not always nice, especially a six-month run in 2022. Multiple biopsies, three traumatic surgeries, and all the emos that go with. No wonder I stopped writingcreating living fully for a season. I tried to return too soon, and another hiatus had to occur. Pummeled by lemons, much?

A friend often tells the joke:

How do you eat an elephant?
One bite at a time.

Well, there I was lost in my thoughts and a cup of tea. And this happened:

This crazy idea that it’s not what’s behind me, it’s what’s ahead.

Taking a hiatus isn’t the same as a stop. (Thank you, Captain Obvious!)

HIATUS: hi-ay-des: noun
break from, pause

STOP: stahp: verb
come to the end of something

Y’all, if you’re living, you’re not stopped. You’re merely on hiatus.

So. What does this have to do with God and writing and tea and you? Puh-lenty.

Faith. Family. Food. Fun. These four words have been the foundations of my writing. The pillars of my online community table, if you will. When I went on hiatus, I put them into hiding so well, even I forgot about them. Forgot who I was writing for. What I wanted to write about. How to move forward.

And then I woke up.

My hiatus is over. I’m building a new foundation. Like an elephant in her herd, I’m listening. I will stand my ground. And I will move forward. But I will always find my way home.

There’s no writing or tea themes in this post, and that’s okay.* ** Not every post will feature every pillar. (*Unless you consider this post writing and I’m drinking tea.) (**And I’m writing scenes and snippets for BLINDSPOT.) But I am going to do my best to journal about things that interest, inform, and edify you.

So I hope you’ll stick around and help me grow. Because like an elephant with a jungle leaf, I’m waving at ya.
